Growth Response and Soybean Production (Glycine Max L.): The Impact of Solid Waste Bokashi and Phosphate Fertilizer

Introduction

The world's population is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, putting immense pressure on the global food system. To meet this demand, agricultural productivity must increase significantly. Soybean (Glycine max L.) is one of the most widely cultivated crops globally, and its production is crucial for food security. However, soybean yields are often limited by factors such as soil fertility, nutrient availability, and environmental conditions. In this context, the use of organic fertilizers and optimal nutrient management is essential to improve soybean productivity.

The Role of Solid Waste Bokashi in Soybean Production

Solid waste bokashi, a fermented organic fertilizer, has gained attention in recent years due to its potential to improve soil fertility and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. Bokashi is rich in microbes and nutrients that can enhance soil structure, increase nutrient availability, and promote plant growth. In this study, we investigated the impact of solid waste bokashi on soybean growth and production.

Methodology

The study was conducted at Kwala Bekala, Medan Johor, Medan, at an altitude of 25 m above sea level, from July to October 2008. A complete factorial random design with two factors was used. The first factor was the palm oil (B) bokashi sludge with four treatments: 0 g/plant, 135 g/plant, 270 g/plant, and 405 g/plant. The second factor was the dose of phosphate fertilizer (P) with four levels: 0 g P2O5/Plant, 0.45 g P2O5/Plant, 0.9 g P2O5/Plant, and 1.35 g P2O5/Plant. Each treatment was repeated three times.

Results

The results showed that the most effective use of bokashi sludge for plant height growth was 181.67 g/plant, while for the number of leaves, the optimal dose was 171.67 g/plant. For the number of productive branches, the dose of 171,428 g/plant was proven to give the best results, while for the dry weight of the seeds, the dose of 188.33 g/plant gave optimal results. The results per plant also showed the highest number at a dose of 238 g/plant, and the results per block reached 229.1 g/plant.

The Impact of Phosphate Fertilizer on Soybean Production

The results showed that the dose of phosphate fertilizer was effective in increasing the number of leaves identified at 0.638 g P2O5/plant, while for the number of productive branches, the optimal dose was 0.708 g P2O5/plant. Likewise, the yield per plant was boosted at a dose of 0.709 g P2O5/plant.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that solid waste bokashi and phosphate fertilizer have a significant impact on soybean growth and production. Bokashi as an organic fertilizer can improve soil fertility, reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, and promote plant growth. Phosphate fertilizer, on the other hand, is essential for plant growth and development, and its optimal dosage is crucial for achieving maximum yields.
