Introduction
Soil Erosion: A Threat to Agricultural Sustainability
Fertile and productive soil is the backbone of agriculture, but erosion problems often threaten land sustainability. Soil erosion can lead to the loss of fertile topsoil, reduced crop yields, and decreased water quality. In this context, the vegetative method has emerged as a promising solution to overcome erosion. This study aims to determine the value of plant factors (c) of soybeans and lemongrass on Andepts in the Kwala Bekala Experimental Garden, North Sumatra University (USU), during the March to July 2013 period.
Methodology
Small Plot and USLE Methods
The method used in this study was a combination of small plot and USLE methods. The small plot method involves measuring the amount of erosion that occurs on a small area of land, while the USLE method uses a mathematical equation to predict the amount of erosion that will occur on a larger area of land. The USLE method takes into account several key parameters, including the amount of erosion that occurred, the rate of erosion that was tolerated, and the level of erosion danger.
Results
Erosion Rates and Factor C Values
The results of this study showed that the land without plants had an erosion of 0.46 tons/(ha.thn), while the land with lemongrass had an erosion of 0.39 tons/(ha.thn), and the land with soybeans had an erosion of 0.30 tons/(ha.thn). This indicates that soybeans are more effective in reducing erosion compared to lemongrass and land without plants. The factor C value for soybeans was found to be 0.655 and 0.666, while the value for lemongrass was 0.851 and 0.866. This suggests that soybeans have a significant contribution in reducing soil erosion.

The results of this study highlight the importance of selecting the right type of plants for agricultural land management, especially in areas that are vulnerable to erosion.
