Introduction

Eating patterns play a crucial role in determining a person's nutritional status. For postpartum mothers, diet is particularly important in supporting their recovery after childbirth. However, various factors can influence the diet of postpartum mothers, including their education, husband's education, knowledge of nutrition, family income, support from the family, and restrictions. This study aims to identify the factors that influence the diet of postpartum mothers in South Tapanuli Regency in 2019.

Background

Postpartum recovery is a critical period for mothers, and diet plays a significant role in supporting their physical and emotional well-being. A well-balanced diet can help mothers recover from childbirth, while a poor diet can lead to various health problems. In South Tapanuli Regency, postpartum mothers face unique challenges, including limited access to healthcare services and a lack of education about nutrition.

Methodology

This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of all postpartum mothers who were within the time span of 0-40 days after giving birth. The sample was taken using the multistage random sampling method, which produced 265 respondents. Data collection was carried out through interviews and 24-hour recall techniques. The independent variables studied included maternal education, husband's education, income, mother's knowledge, family support, and restrictions on food, while the dependent variable was the diet of the puerperium.

Results

The results showed that only 22.8% of mothers with good education had a good diet, while husband's education with a good diet recorded a majority number of 23.0%. Meanwhile, the majority of mothers had less knowledge (16.9%), and 34.4% of respondents had low income. In terms of family support, the majority (22.6%) stated that there was support, while 23.0% did not have restrictions on food.

Bivariate Analysis

Bivariate analysis showed that there was no significant relationship between maternal education and diet (P> 0.05), and the husband's education also did not show a significant relationship (P> 0.05). However, there was a significant relationship between mother's knowledge and diet (p <0.05) and also between income and diet (p <0.05). Family support and restrictions on food did not show a significant relationship with diet (P> 0.05).

Multivariate Analysis

The multivariate test results showed that the most significant variable that affects the diet of the puerperium is the mother's knowledge (p = 0.024). This indicates that the mother's knowledge of nutrition is very important in forming a good diet.

Conclusion

From this study, it can be concluded that education about diet and nutrition is very important for postpartum mothers. Family participation, especially from the husband, is also an important factor in supporting a good diet. Therefore, it is hoped that the role of health workers can be more active in providing relevant information about healthy diet during the puerperium. This effort is expected to improve the quality of the diet of postpartum mothers in the future, which in turn will contribute to the health of the mother and child.
