The Influence of Health Education on the Knowledge and Attitudes of Students at the Arjuna Laguboti Tobasamosir Private Vocational School in 2015

Introduction

Breast cancer is a major health concern in Indonesia, with an incidence rate of 28.7%. Early detection is crucial in preventing the high mortality rate associated with breast cancer. Awareness and education play a vital role in increasing public knowledge and awareness about breast cancer. This study aims to investigate the influence of health education using the lecture plus method on the knowledge and attitudes of students at the Arjuna Laguboti Tobasamosir Private Vocational School in 2015.

Background

Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Indonesia. The high mortality rate is a serious concern, especially in developing countries. Early detection through self-examination is a crucial step in preventing breast cancer. Education about breast self-examination (BSE) is essential in increasing public awareness and knowledge about breast cancer.

Methodology

This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest design. The population studied consisted of students in class X and XI at the Arjuna Laguboti Tobasamosir Private Vocational School. The lecture plus method was used as the health education approach. Statistical tests, including the Pair-T Test, Wilcoxon, and Mann-Whitney tests, were used to analyze the data with a significance level of 5%.

Results

The analysis showed that there was a significant influence of health education on student knowledge, with a P value of 0.000. This indicates that the lecture plus method was effective in increasing student knowledge about breast cancer. However, the analysis also showed that there was no significant effect of health education on student attitudes, with a P value of 0.954.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that the lecture plus method is an effective approach in increasing student knowledge about breast cancer. Education about BSE must be integrated into the education curriculum to ensure that students continue to obtain this knowledge in a sustainable manner. By doing so, future generations will be more concerned with their own health and better prepared to take preventive measures from an early age.

Conclusion

This study highlights the importance of health education in increasing student knowledge and awareness about breast cancer. The lecture plus method is an effective approach in promoting health education. The results of this study suggest that the Arjuna Laguboti Tobasamosir Private Vocational School should cooperate with health workers and appoint counselor teachers and peers as counselors to deliver information about early detection of breast cancer more effectively. Students are also expected to routinely conduct self-examination as a first step in preventing breast cancer.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Integrate education about BSE into the education curriculum to ensure that students continue to obtain this knowledge in a sustainable manner.
Cooperate with health workers to deliver information about early detection of breast cancer more effectively.
Appoint counselor teachers and peers as counselors to provide support and guidance to students.
Encourage students to routinely conduct self-examination as a first step in preventing breast cancer.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

The sample size was limited to students in class X and XI at the Arjuna Laguboti Tobasamosir Private Vocational School.
The study was conducted in a single school and may not be generalizable to other schools.
The study only investigated the influence of health education on student knowledge and attitudes and did not explore other factors that may influence breast cancer awareness.
