Introduction

Palm oil germination is often inhibited due to the nature of dormancy they have. Hard seed skin makes the absorption of water and oxygen needed for the germination process to be inhibited. To overcome this, the technique of breaking dormancy needs to be done, such as heating at a temperature of 40 ° C and soaking with KNO3 solution (potassium nitrate), a growth regulator. This study aims to reveal the effect of the old heating and concentration of KNO3 on oil palm seed germination.

Methodology

The study was conducted in Medan, North Sumatra, using the factorial random design method (RAK). Two factors of treatment were examined, namely:

Factor I: Duration of Heating (H)

Consists of 4 levels, namely 0, 10, 20, and 30 days.
The duration of heating had a significant effect on germination of oil palm seeds.

Factor II: KNO3 (K) Concentration

Consists of 4 levels, namely 0, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6%.
Soaking with KNO3 for 20 hours also significantly affects the germination of oil palm seeds.

Results

The results showed that the duration of heating had a significant effect on germination of oil palm seeds. Heating at a temperature of 40 ° C for 20 days is the best treatment, with a time of sprouts 30.75 days after planting (HST), the percentage of germination is 56.94%, the germination rate is 24.30 days/seeds, and the vigor index of 0.21 seeds /day.

Soaking with KNO3 for 20 hours also significantly affects the germination of oil palm seeds. Treatment with KNO3 concentration of 0.4% is the best treatment, with a sprout time of 30.75 HST, the percentage of germination of 50.69%, the germination rate of 24.23 days/seeds, and the vigor index of 0.25 seeds/day.

Interaction between the duration of heating and soaking with KNO3 for 20 hours also significantly affects the germination of oil palm seeds. The best combination of treatment is obtained by heating at 40 ° C for 20 days and KNO3 concentration is 0.4%. This combination results in a sprout time 26.00 HST, the percentage of germination is 72.22%, the germination rate of 19.84 days/seeds, and the vigor index of 0.29 seeds/day.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that heating and immersion with KNO3 can be an effective technique for breaking dormancy of oil palm seeds and increasing germination.

Warming

Warming up at 40 ° C for 20 days shows the best results in this study. This shows that heating can help soften seed skin and increase water absorption and oxygen.

KNO3

KNO3 acts as a growth regulator that can increase the activity of enzymes and seed metabolism, thereby accelerating the germination process. KNO3 concentration 0.4% proved effective in this study.

Interaction

Interaction between the length of heating and KNO3 concentration shows that the combination of these two treatments can give better results compared to using only one treatment.

Conclusion

This study shows that the duration of heating and concentration of KNO3 has a significant influence on the germination of oil palm seeds. The combination of heating at a temperature of 40 ° C for 20 days and soaking with KNO3 0.4% is the best combination of treatment, producing faster, higher, and more vigor germination compared to other treatments.

Suggestion

Further research on other factors that can affect the germination of oil palm seeds, such as soil types, humidity, and types of varieties, can be done to increase the effectiveness of dormancy scratching techniques and optimizing the germination process.
