Gender Analysis of Farmers: A Case Study of Corn Farmers in Tigabinanga Village, Tigabinanga District, Karo Regency

Introduction

The agricultural sector plays a vital role in the economy of many countries, and farmers are the backbone of this sector. However, despite their significant contribution to the economy, farmers, particularly women, face numerous challenges and injustices in their daily lives. This study aims to analyze the equality and gender injustice experienced by farmers in an effort to improve their family's economy. By using nurture theory, which emphasizes that social construction of society affects the understanding of gender, this research carries out a descriptive qualitative approach.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the experiences of farmers in Tigabinanga Village. The data collection was carried out through interviews, observation, and documentation as primary data, while secondary data were obtained from various related literature. The informant in this study consisted of 10 farmers in Tigabinanga Village and 1 kelurahan employee to complete the data. The data were analyzed using the nurture theory, which emphasizes that social construction of society affects the understanding of gender.

Results

The results of this study showed that farmer women in Tigabinanga Village worked endlessly from morning to evening to meet the needs of the family and ease the burden of the husband. They are very active and independent in running agriculture, and do not forget their responsibilities in managing the household. Although there is the dominance of men's power in society, this does not make women feel depressed or helpless. Conversely, peasant women show strength and determination in carrying out a dual role as a farmer as well as a household administrator.

However, farmer women face several challenges in their agricultural activities. The main weaknesses faced include lack of energy, uncertain weather conditions, limited capital, and the difficulty of getting fertilizer that is often expensive. Injustice in access to resources such as capital and fertilizer can hamper the productivity and success of farm women.

Discussion

The analysis conducted in this study revealed that although farmers in Tigabinanga Village had a significant role in improving the family's economy, they were still trapped in various gender injustice. Women show high resilience and will at work, but they need more support and recognition in social and economic structures. The findings of this study are consistent with the nurture theory, which emphasizes that social construction of society affects the understanding of gender.

The results of this study have several implications for policy and practice. Firstly, it highlights the need for related parties, including the government and non-governmental organizations, to pay more attention to farmers, by providing better access to resources and training. This will not only help improve their condition economically, but also contribute to the creation of better gender equality in the community. Secondly, it emphasizes the need for farmers to be empowered through education and training, which will enable them to make informed decisions about their agricultural activities.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of analyzing the equality and gender injustice experienced by farmers in an effort to improve their family's economy. The findings of this study show that farmer women in Tigabinanga Village face numerous challenges in their agricultural activities, including lack of energy, uncertain weather conditions, limited capital, and the difficulty of getting fertilizer that is often expensive. However, despite these challenges, farmer women show high resilience and will at work, and they need more support and recognition in social and economic structures.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Provide better access to resources: Related parties, including the government and non-governmental organizations, should provide better access to resources such as capital and fertilizer to farmers.
Empower farmers through education and training: Farmers should be empowered through education and training, which will enable them to make informed decisions about their agricultural activities.
Promote gender equality: Efforts should be made to promote gender equality in the community, which will enable women to have equal access to resources and opportunities.
Support farmer organizations: Farmer organizations should be supported to enable them to provide better services to farmers, including access to resources and training.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted in a single village, which may not be representative of other villages. Secondly, the study was limited to a descriptive qualitative approach, which may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the issues faced by farmers. Finally, the study was limited to a small sample size, which may not be representative of the larger population.

Future Research Directions

Future research should build on the findings of this study by conducting a more comprehensive study that includes a larger sample size and a more diverse population. Additionally, future research should explore the impact of policies and programs on farmers, particularly women, and their agricultural activities.
