The Effect of Corporate Governance and the Board of Commissioners on Earnings Management in Manufacturing Companies Listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange
Introduction
The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) is one of the largest stock exchanges in Southeast Asia, with a significant number of manufacturing companies listed on it. The performance of these companies is influenced by various factors, including corporate governance and the role of the Board of Commissioners. This study aims to examine the effect of corporate governance and the Board of Commissioners on earnings management in manufacturing companies listed on the IDX.
Background
Earnings management is a common practice in companies, where management manipulates financial reports to achieve certain goals, such as meeting earnings expectations or hiding losses. This practice can have significant consequences, including misleading investors and damaging the company's reputation. Corporate governance and the Board of Commissioners play a crucial role in preventing earnings management by ensuring that management is accountable and transparent.
Methodology
This study used a quantitative approach, with a sample of 85 manufacturing companies listed on the IDX. The data used was external data obtained from the IDX website. The analysis was carried out using descriptive statistical methods, classical assumptions tests, and hypothesis tests using multiple linear regression.
Results
The results of this study showed that both partially and simultaneously, the independent variables of corporate governance and the Board of Commissioners had no significant effect on the dependent variable of earnings management. This suggests that corporate governance and the Board of Commissioners are not the main indicators that have a major influence on the practice of earnings management.
Discussion
The results of this study need to be seen carefully. Although it does not show a significant effect, it does not mean that corporate governance and the Board of Commissioners do not have a role in controlling earnings management. There are several factors that might be the cause, including:

The application of the principles of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) in some companies has not been optimal, so the effect on earnings management has not been significantly seen.
*** A limited role of the Board of Commissioners: ** The Board of Commissioners in several manufacturing companies in Indonesia has a more formal and less active role in overseeing management performance. This resulted in the Board of Commissioners not yet able to provide optimal effectiveness in suppressing earnings management practices.
External factors: ** External factors such as macroeconomic conditions, industrial competition, and government regulations can also affect management behavior in managing profits.
