Introduction

Tofu industry liquid waste is a potential candidate for biogas production, and this study aims to reveal the effect of fermentation time and raw material composition on biogas production from tofu liquid waste.

Methodology

This study uses a biodigester with a capacity of 14 liters, with tofu liquid waste as the main raw material. Two experimental conditions are applied: liquid waste without coagulation and liquid waste that has gone through the coagulation process using tamarind seeds. The research variable includes the ratio of the volume of liquid waste with water (1: 0, 1: 0.25, and 1: 0.5) and the duration of fermentation (7, 15, and 21 days).

Results

The results showed that tofu liquid waste without coagulation produced optimum biogas of 4.2 liters in 15 days of fermentation with a ratio of liquid waste and water 1: 0 (v/v). This condition also shows a significant decrease in water pollution parameters, with the percentage of COD allowance of 46.29%, TSS by 7.56%, and TDS of 41.85%. The flame test shows the blue fire and not smoky, indicating the presence of methane in the resulting biogas.

Meanwhile, tofu liquid waste that has gone through the coagulation process produces optimum biogas of 3.1 liters with a fermentation time of 12 days and a ratio of liquid waste and water 1: 0 (v/v). Decreased water pollution parameters recorded with a percentage of COD allowance by 1.45%, TSS by 77.51%, and TDS of 44.65%. The flame test also shows the blue fire, signifying the presence of methane in biogas.

Discussion

Although these results are promising, further analysis needs to be done to determine the suitability of the quality standard of industrial liquid waste based on KepmenLH No. 51 of 1995. The results showed that the TDS value had met the standards, while the COD value approached the standard. However, the TSS value still does not meet the standards.

This study is proof of the potential of tofu liquid waste to produce biogas, but further optimization is needed related to the coagulation process and fermentation time to achieve the efficiency of biogas production and the quality of liquid waste that meets quality standards. This can be realized by conducting further research involving variations in coagulant concentrations, coagulation methods, and more optimal fermentation time.

Conclusion

Utilization of tofu liquid waste as a renewable energy source through the fermentation process can have a broad positive impact.
