In Indonesia, Ramadan fasting lasts for 13-14 hours a day, during which Muslims are prohibited from consuming food and drink, smoking, having sex, and are recommended to hold back emotions.

Research has shown that fasting or Intermittent Fasting (IF) can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress through autofagi activation. IF can reduce insulin levels and fasting blood sugar, while increasing the concentration of growth hormones and insulin sensitivity. This has a positive impact on the cardiovascular system by lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides. In addition, IF is also associated with weight loss and abdominal fat, which ultimately improves metabolic markers significantly. However, the influence of Ramadan fasting (RIF) on oxidative stress is still not completely revealed, and there are differences in research results about this effect.

This study shows that Ramadan fasting can reduce oxidative stress parameters, namely MalondialDehyda (MDA) levels, in obesity patients.
