If waste management is not done correctly, this can have a negative impact on public health and reduce environmental quality.

This study uses a descriptive survey method to evaluate the waste management system and traders' participation in maintaining environmental cleanliness in the Gelugur Market. The overall population consists of 665 traders, and 87 samples are taken randomly using the cluster random sampling method.

Waste Management System and Traders' Participation
The results showed that most traders do not have a private trash can, and the collection of waste by the market manager is not done evenly. The waste transportation process is carried out only 2-3 times a day, and the waste is directly discharged into a landfill (TPA) without going through an adequate processing. The merchant participation index in providing trash bins is in the unfavorable category, which is 50.6%, and for garbage disposal in the market, the results are not good with 54.0% of traders do not actively participate. However, traders' participation in payment of levies and obeying cleaning regulations gets a good category, with 100% of traders who comply.

The existing waste management system consists of storage, collection, transportation, and waste management, all of which are in the category of not meeting health standards. Therefore, it is very necessary to increase the attention of market management in the development of environmental health facilities. This includes better waste transportation facilities and organic waste treatment into compost.
